Interpret job-posting language literally
“Remote” may mean within one country, near a customer, or home-based with frequent travel. “Hybrid” may mean occasional design reviews or four fixed office days. “Flexible” may refer only to start time. Save the posting and ask the recruiter for the present expectation in days, distance, and travel percentage.
Also ask whether the arrangement is attached to the role, location, manager, or current employee. If a policy can change, understand the notice period and whether relocation would be expected. Never assume a verbal statement overrides the written offer or job location.
Protect technical access and career progression
Location freedom can create a hidden cost if technical decisions happen informally at the lab or office. Ask how remote engineers join design reviews, access hardware, reserve test time, get mentorship, and receive visible assignments. A flexible role is weaker if it moves you away from the team’s real center of influence.
Look for asynchronous documentation, distributed leadership, equitable meeting practices, and remote access to development resources. For hardware teams, a deliberate cadence of on-site build and test periods can be more effective than vague, exception-based flexibility.
Verify the arrangement with the future manager
Recruiters can describe policy; managers describe practice. Ask the manager to walk through the previous two weeks for someone in the role. Clarify fixed days, ad hoc calls to site, customer visits, time-zone meetings, and what happens during test or launch periods.
Treat current flexibility as one part of the offer. Compare it with the work itself, compensation, commute on required days, career access, and manager quality. The best arrangement is the one that solves your real constraint without separating you from the work you want to do.
