Review customer demand, revenue concentration, contracts or backlog, capital intensity, regulatory need, current program phase, and internal mobility. Then assess personal resilience: skills, credentials, network, savings, and geographic options.
Durable demand and funded work are different
Power, water, transportation, defense, health, food, and computing may have durable needs, but specific employers and projects still face cycles. Public-company filings can show business segments, customer concentration, backlog, workforce risks, and capital priorities.
A job candidate should not attempt to become an equity analyst. Use filings to ask better questions: Which customer or program funds this team? What milestone renews that funding? What portion of the work is committed versus expected? What changed during the last downturn or reorganization?
Large and regulated does not mean motionless
Utilities, aerospace programs, established manufacturers, and infrastructure firms often have long-lived assets, customers, and compliance obligations. That can support continuity, formal processes, and specialist roles.
These organizations still restructure, move work, change suppliers, automate, and respond to policy or market shifts. Stability may arrive with slower decisions, narrower roles, location dependence, or compensation tradeoffs. Decide which tradeoffs are acceptable rather than seeking a risk-free company.
Portable skills are personal insurance
Technical fundamentals, systems thinking, communication, licensure, software fluency, test judgment, manufacturing knowledge, and evidence of cross-functional impact can travel across employers. Proprietary tools and program knowledge matter, but they should not be your only career capital.

Compare concentration and recovery options
A single-customer startup, one-program site, or specialized project office may have high concentration even when the current work is strong. A diversified enterprise may offer more recovery paths but require relocation or a willingness to change domains.
Map what happens if the team’s main program stops: another local team, a different site, a different industry, or a job search. Stability is improved when you have options you would genuinely use.
Use evidence without making promises
Read the official annual report or public budget source, current careers site, and business-area information. Date the evidence. In interviews, ask how the team’s headcount and mission changed, what work is funded, and which skills transfer internally.
